Olympic Athlete Assignment

During the winter Olympics you will be responsible for researching about a Canadian athlete. The two limitations are:

  • no one in the class is allowed to research the same athlete
  • no one is allowed to research a NHL player (trying to broaden our experience and knowledge)
Be prepared with a minimum of 3 possible athletes by Friday.

Here are two resources to begin your search:

Star of Fear, Star of Hope- Summary

Star of Fear, Star of Hope - Summary

Star of Fear, Star of Hope is set in France during World War II. The story begins with Lydia having a yellow star sewed on her coat. It is a symbol that she is Jewish. The main character Helen is telling about the sleepover she spent with her friend Lydia on the night before Helen's ninth birthday. Two people, Madame Eleven O'clock and Midnight Ghost, knock on the apartment door, asking for help. The names were supposed to be code to help them get help from Helen's neighbour who has gone missing. It turns out they are both Jewish people looking for help. The police and soldiers are gathering up all the Jewish people to take them away. Lydia is worried and asks to be taken home. Lydia's family is taken away and Helen explains never sees Lydia again.

Model- Summary Writing

The book “Fly Away Home” is written by Eve Bunting.  The main characters in the story are the dad and kid who is the narrator.  The boy’s father and the kid are homeless so they live in an airport.  They do their best to blend into the crowd and stay unnoticed. One day the young boy becomes fixated with an injured bird that is desperately trying to get out of the airport. Eventually the bird recovers enough to slip out a window that is open.  On weekends the father works as a janitor while the little boy and his friend Denny return luggage carts for a small amount of money.  The boy keeps all of his savings in his shoes.  Dad continues to try and find an apartment that he can afford but is unsuccessful.  The story ends with the boy thinking about how the bird preserved and eventually got out of the airport.  It reminds the boy of his own situation and gives him hope that one day he and his dad will be able to find their own place.
